Oh, GenX. When I was in college I wanted to be a film critic of all useless things (only to be topped in idiocy a decade later by going for an MFA). The first time I saw my name on a masthead as an advertising assistant felt like I was on my way. Magazines, even the lower-tier ones I worked at, mattered. Then, the rise of blogs as I dogpaddled my way through Weblogs Inc./AOL for years, learning about SEO, galleries, and the cruel truth of writing for clicks.

With the rise of AI stamping out so many writing/marketing/content jobs, it feels to me like the dream is dead. But then I heard about a friend's son wanting to go to college to study creative writing. Practically, I'd like to tell him not to, the road, if it still even exists, is long and full of bullshit. And yet, I remember what it was like to be young, when your imagination is firing and everything feels possible and impossibly romantic, would I not want him to have that?
